OUR CLINICAL STAFF
Maternal fetal Medicine staff and hospital affiliations

In addition to our physicians, our practice has health professionals enabling us to provide a multidisciplinary approach to your high risk pregnancy. Our clinical staff includes perinatal nurses, genetic counselors, and perinatal sonographers. Some members of our staff have been with our practice since the beginning and have contributed to the substantial growth we have experienced over time. As we have grown, the newer members of our perinatal team have tremendously added to the level of care we can deliver. This includes medical, psychological, emotional, and social support.

Overall, our practice utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to the high risk pregnant patient and their family. In addition to our qualified clinical personnel, we have the distinction of being accredited by the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and are certified in First Trimester Nuchal Translucency Screening.

GENETICS

Our genetic counselors are involved with those patients that have concerns with the genetic health of the pregnancy. They will discuss any issues that may increase the risk of a genetic problem with the baby. Examples are a family history of a genetic abnormality, a prior child with a genetic problem, or if the patient or the father of the baby themselves have a genetic-related abnormality. They meet with patients to discuss genetic screening or genetic testing options including First Trimester Screen, CVS, and amniocentesis. They will then contact you and your obstetrical provider with the results of your screening or testing. They will also discuss medication you may have taken to assess if there are any concerns for your baby. Melissa or Kim will then discuss your medication history with our physicians and a determination is made whether it is safe to continue the medication during your pregnancy. Contrary to popular opinions concerning medication use in pregnancy, many of the prescribed or over-the-counter medications available can be taken during pregnancy with minimal or no adverse effects to your baby. It is important to let us know of all medications you have taken since becoming pregnant.

PERINATAL NURSING STAFF

Our Nursing staff has extensive experience in perinatal medicine. Some of our nurses have been a part of our practice since the beginning. Our perinatal nurses that you may see in our office, Paula, Liz Brittany, Mandy and Tara are an integral part of both the outpatient and inpatient management of patients. They provide counseling and teaching in the administration of injectable medications that patients will be taking at home. The types of teaching and instruction include medications such as Insulin and heparin. They coordinate outpatient services or therapies that patients may need depending on their paricular problems during the pregnancy. These may involve the outpatient management of preterm labor or nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (i.e. - hyperemesis).

Our outpatient nursing team has been complemented over the last several years with inpatient perinatal nursing through Jeanine Larkin, R.N.C. She has been instrumental in assisting our physicians with the management of our inpatients and coordinating care with families and our referring providers.

PERINATAL SONOGRAPHERS

The perinatal sonographers at MFMCP are responsible for performing the initial assessment of your unborn baby. Together, they have extensive experience in perinatal ultrasound. They are very active in the participation of your perinatal care. They will take a history of your health and pregnancy. They will then perform an ultrasound to check your baby’s growth and development. This includes evaluating the internal organs (examples are the brain and heart) as well as the external organs (examples are the arms and legs). For some women who may have an increased risk for preterm delivery, they will also do an internal (transvaginal) ultrasound to measure the length of your cervix. This will help our physicians determine whether you may be in preterm labor or at risk for preterm delivery. They also will assist in any invasive procedures that may be needed during your pregnancy. Our perinatal sonographers include those listed below.
